AVIF

AV1 Image File Format

AVIF is a modern raster image format based on keyframes from the AV1 video codec, developed by the Alliance for Open Media. It typically achieves 50% smaller file sizes than JPEG at equivalent perceptual quality, and unlike JPEG it supports transparency, HDR, wide color gamut, and lossless compression. Browser support reached critical mass around 2022, and AVIF is increasingly used for web images where bandwidth reduction is a priority.
