Microsoft Word Document (legacy)

DOC is the original binary file format for Microsoft Word, used as the default from 1983 until Word 2007 introduced DOCX. The format is proprietary and undocumented for much of its history, which is why opening legacy DOC files in non-Microsoft software occasionally produces formatting drift. Most modern workflows have moved to DOCX, but DOC files are still common in archives and older business systems.
