JPEG is a lossy compressed raster image format, standardised in 1992. Its aggressive but visually clean compression made it the default format for digital photography and the early web. JPEG is well-suited to photographs and natural images, but its compression artifacts make it a poor choice for text, line art, or images that need transparency.
