WebP

WebP is a modern raster format developed by Google in 2010, derived from the VP8 video codec. It supports both lossy and lossless compression and includes an alpha transparency channel in both modes, features that JPEG and PNG each only partially share. WebP images are typically 25–35% smaller than comparable JPEG or PNG files, and it has become the dominant format for web images on high-traffic sites following its full adoption across all major browsers around 2022.
