WebP

WebP is a modern raster format developed by Google in 2010, derived from the VP8 video codec. It supports both lossy and lossless compression and includes an alpha transparency channel in both modes — features that JPEG and PNG each only partially share. WebP images are typically 25–35% smaller than comparable JPEG or PNG files, and it has become the dominant format for web images on high-traffic sites following its full adoption across all major browsers around 2022.
