WOFF / WOFF2

Web Open Font Format

WOFF (Web Open Font Format) was developed in 2010 to package TrueType and OpenType fonts for efficient delivery over the web. A WOFF file wraps the font data with a compressed container and mandatory metadata. WOFF2, released in 2018, adds Brotli compression and achieves roughly 30% smaller file sizes than WOFF. Both formats are used exclusively in web contexts via the CSS @font-face rule; browsers expose the font to page rendering but do not allow direct download of the underlying font data.
